IMC 720 Management of Information & Knowledge Resources
The course attempts to teach students the whole dimension of information and knowledge and its cycle of development, theory and also the value. Students are expected to learn the role of knowledge in civilization and how it developed from the old writing on stone to the present ICT. Students are given the exposure on the multidimensional types, category, and forms of information and how they developed into knowledge. Both tacit and explicit knowledge will be emphasized and where they that are available, how can they be acquired, their use and the way they can be accessed, utilized and presented This course will also describe the various information agencies and how they are managed. This course enables students in wide range of contexts to identify client needs, develop resource collections for a client base, provide reference/information services, and empower clients through information literacy and information skills and user education programmes.
The theory of knowledge challenges students to reflect critically on diverse ways of knowing and areas of knowledge, and to consider the role which knowledge plays in a global society. The course encourages students to become aware of themselves as thinkers, to become aware of the complexity of knowledge, and to recognize the need to act responsibly in an increasingly interconnected world. Every individual (including intellectuals, scientists, teachers, etc.) possesses socially situated knowledge because one’s social location affects how we think and what we think about. Also, since institutionally manufactured knowledge and what individuals “know” are often synonymous, the sociology of knowledge explores the constructiveness of everyday, “mundane” reality within larger systems of knowledge and discourse.
